What Kind of Food Can You Get on a Food Truck?
If you’ve never ordered from a food truck, you may wonder what sorts of foods are available. There’s no short answer to that as the food offered is often as unique as the truck serving it. Here’s a broad sample of what kind of foods you’ll be able to get from a food truck.
The first thing about most food truck food is that the items served should be carry-and-go, as many people are grabbing the food in a limited time window. Food trucks usually are making their food with real ingredients, not flavoring. The foods you get at a truck are usually the only place you’ll find then, which makes it even more exciting to visit a food truck! 500 food trucks were surved by Datassentials and they found that the average number of entrees is ten with a mean price of $6.30 and an average number of appetizers sides is six with the price average right around $3.11. Here are the most common foods to be found on a food truck – and we can’t say you’ll find any of these at a food truck festival as they are examples and by no means is this list complete – but it’s a good guide to show you the awesomeness your mouth should expect.
We’re not talking a ham and cheese sandwich or a tuna salad sandwich here – unless they have a gourmet twist – but instead some really unique and adventurous sandwiches. For example how about a bacon and peanut butter sandwich. Too out of the box for you? Try a hamburger sandwich. Or maybe a scrambled egg and ham sandwich with feta. The best part of the sandwiches in many trucks are their names – you might find a Cougar, or perhaps a Naked Babe on the menu. Or maybe instead you may find some genre specific sandwiches like a Vietnamese sandwich .
Everyone loves desert. Everyone. That’s why there are trucks devoted to nothing but deserts. Some trucks specialize in cupcakes while others have nothing but ice cream. The cupcakes aren’t your grandma’s, unless she made flavored cupcakes like root beer float, coconut cream pie, or black forest cherry. If your grandma made those, we’re jealous. In the ice cream department you might find a stout (beer) flavored ice cream, made with real beer – or even mixtures like coconut and vanilla. Then there are things you may have never thought of like Earl Grey (tea) ice cream. Hmmmm.
We love soup and despite what many think, it can be a year round item to eat. Nothing wrong with some cold carrot soup in the summer or some warm mustard soup in the summer. Maybe a new twist on clam chowder is what you are craving, or a split pea soup that isn’t boring. We’ve even come across a sloppy joe soup – and it was incredible. Or the pork chop and cheese soup. Totally hungry now.
Kinda broad here – but American foods can be pizza, hot dogs, mac and cheese, etc. Not any pizza though – how about a crab leg pizza? Maybe a s’mores pizza. Or pumpkin pizza. In the hot dog department, ditch that relish and ketchup for toppings like fried egg, homemade chili, potato fries – even avocado. We once had a BBQ pork dog and we still are having dreams about that one. Mac and cheese may be the ultimate comfort food – but how about adding some pulled pork, or perhaps buffalo chicken? Maybe some cheeseburger mac and cheese will do for you. I think we just gained 10 pounds typing this – and it’s all good.
Everyone loves breakfast foods all day – and while some trucks in the world are just breakfast trucks, others serve breakfast foods with a new twist. You might find a chicken omelet with ranch sauce, or a Belgian waffle topped with salsa. Bacon is always a popular item and so is chocolate – bring the two together and you have a happy, happy mouth.
Remember – portable foods are key and lots of foods that can be eaten without sitting down or perhaps only need a fork or spoon. Pulled pork is always a great find as are burgers, wraps, and vegetarian offerings. Whatever you find will have that flavor twist – maybe a pulled pork sandwich with basil marinara and provolone? Hungry?
