What is a Food Truck? A Beginners Guide to Street Food
Food Trucks are a new thing to many people and the people who know what they are absolutely love them. If you don’t know much about food trucks, you will after you read through this beginners guide.
Let’s start off with something you already know – the hot dog cart. Those are the exact opposite of what a food truck is. Sure, we all love a good dog from one of those carts, but we aren’t talking about them. Think of the hot dog cart as the rotary phone of street food and food trucks as the iPhone of street foods. Those carts at the fair with the fried dough and the sausage + peppers? Those aren’t food trucks either – they’re more fast food carts. A food truck gives you a food experience and that experience involves unique, often high end foods.
The food trucks are licensed and go through the same health department processes as a brick and mortar restaurant does. Food trucks are a must stop location for foodies, and even if you aren’t a foodie, you will love what you find at a food truck. Many trucks specialize in one type or style of food. There are trucks that serve BBQ, Asian cuisine, gourmet ice cream, Thai food, Mac and Cheese – all sorts of things that the imagination can dream up. Many foods are hybrids – for example how about a food truck selling Thai sandwiches, maybe a curry coconut chicken sandwich. That gets three noms!
What it really comes down to is that the food is very, very fine and the price is very, very fair. You walk up to the truck and order a little bit of food heaven – how awesome is that? Sometimes you might even find a well known chef on board making the food. The food truck is all about having fun – making food and eating it. One of the greatest things about food trucks is that they are so mobile – you could eat from one at a wedding, street curb near your work, a reunion – anyplace!
